Design Brief
Our group designed the Scorpio magnetic backpack. It’s designed to be easily accessible in any condition, lightweight, and store electronics safely. It’s ability to hover around the user stems from the magnetic belt the user wears, which interacts with the magnet at the bottom of the backpack. This dramatically reduces any weight the user has to support, as well as introduces 360 degrees of free movement.
Scorpio is a chrysalis-shaped backpack, with a wider top and narrow bottom. Two “wings” are folded over each other on either side, and are made of a harder metallic material. These “wings” fold outward to expose the interior, and are detachable for easier access. The interior of the backpack is solid plastic, with four hollow pockets corresponding with the placement of the “wings,” the top being larger than the bottom. Tools are stored inside these pockets, and a rechargeable battery is able to wirelessly charge most electronic devices within the pack.
On top of the backpack is a robotic arm, able to easily handle items both inside and outside Scorpio. It’s able to autonomously sort items inside, but also hold tools and assist it’s user in simple tasks, for example, passing items and holding parts. It’s also foldable, and fits comfortably inside a compartment on top of the pack.
The backpack is accessed by a remote control device that comes paired with the belt, which is linked with the user. The device can be controlled via touch and voice commands. Scorpio can not be accessed without said remote, and such acts as an anti-theft device, increasing safety.
The color scheme consists of a while exterior, for reflecting heat from the sun, and a dark grey interior. However, embedded LEDs can be colorized for personal preference.
Our clients are engineers, planetary explorationists, mechanics, and anything relating to them. However, this backpack can be used for other scenarios, like hiking and camping, or simple everyday activities. Scorpio can be used for a number of different scenarios, including dangerous excursions, and zero-gravity repairs. The easy access and maneuverability the backpack provides makes repairs and maintenance a quick and safe process, and the extra arm allows users to reduce the usual hassle of having to fiddle with loose items and tools.
